What’s Your Excuse?

No Excuse Mom

Do y’all remember no excuse mom?  Her name is Maria Kang and she stirred up a bit of controversy with her ad a couple of years ago:

What's Your Excuse | DJ Ranch

When I first saw the ad I was like “damn…she looks great” and then I thought “damn, what a great ad” She was right in your face with the tagline “What’s Your Excuse” and I loved it!

Then the controversy followed – and of course, it did.  People criticizing her apparent lack of understanding of their particular challenges – working full-time, single motherhood, pregnancy complications, etc.  The critical voices had an excuse for why they couldn’t look like her.

The Human Race

Here’s what had me confused…you’re mad at her for calling out the human tendency to make excuses?  The human race…not just you.

Excuses are a dime a dozen.

We’ve all procrastinated… waiting until the timing was “right”.

Or delaying until we’ve felt like “it”.

We all have the same 24 hours a day. Take a moment and reflect on your day today – where did you spend your moments? If your time spent wasn’t on what you wanted, what changes can you make? Own it.

“Watch your thoughts, they become words;
watch your words, they become actions;
watch your actions, they become habits;
watch your habits, they become character;
watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”

FRANK OUTLAW, Late President of the Bi-Lo Stores

Stop making excuses, stop criticizing others for rocking it out, and start exerting the necessary effort in creating our own destiny. Step into the arena.
