It’s the belly laughs y’all

Dear Mr. Matthews,

Our marriage isn’t perfect…but you know…it’s pretty amazing.

That’s right – pretty damn amazing.

But it’s not the highlight reels that have made the past 23 years amazing. It’s us…it’s our day in day out journey that’s made it amazing.

It was the day we made our vows and really wanted to believe we could keep them.

It was the early days in our careers when we were trying to make a name for ourselves.

It was the day we welcomed our first son and drove home wondering how in the world we’d be good parents.

It was the day we signed the line for our first home – something I never thought we could afford. We were 27 or so, and I walked the sidewalks looking to see how everyone else was “adulting”.

It was the day we become parents a second time. Our family growing with our confidence in parenthood. We had managed to keep the first one alive and in one piece.

It was the days, the nights, the weekends spent on the field. The loads of laundry and scrambling to locate equipment.  It was seeing Matthews on the uniform and feeling a swell of pride and belonging.

The days you brought home the bacon dove. And venison. And antelope. And the day you threatened a gumbo with squirrel. And the night you scared the neighbors with your Christmas decorations.

It was the birthdays, the anniversaries, the Mondays, the Sundays, the easy days, the hard days. Even the fights that taught us how to forgive and be kind above all else.

It’s the days we’ve celebrated and the days where we faced challenges. I can’t imagine sharing them with anyone else.

But it’s the belly laughs I love the most. The pained look when I’m laughing too loud but you’re laughing too hard to stop me. Those are my favorite days.

It’s all the days…all the moments we’ve woven together to create this life we have today. It’s you and me.

Here’s to another 23,

XOXO – Me
