Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.— James 1:2-4
What more needs to be said?
We will face trials of many kinds – it is simply a part of life…but it is not without purpose.
Our testing develops our perseverance.
What is perseverance? The dictionary defines it as steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.
The verse goes on to indicate that in order to be mature and complete (not lacking anything) I must let perseverance complete it’s work.
So basically I need the trials in my life to become steadfast and through my steadfastness I will be mature and complete not lacking anything…the trials in my life are what make me a stronger follower of Christ…kind of like going to the gym.
I just finished a book (David and Goliath) that explored this concept…the author challenges our thinking about obstacles, disadvantages, suffering and adversity and how they can actually make us stronger and more likely to succeed.
So wherever you are today…at peace or experiencing some trials of life…know there is a purpose and our Lord is sovereign and at work in our lives.
