Galatians For You

I’ve been studying a book called Galatians For You by Timothy Keller and while most of the time I feel like most of it is going over my head I’ve really enjoyed it.

One must never stop learning…what have you read today? This week? Month?  I encourage you to pick up something hard.  Something that makes you think and is longer than a tweet, post or blog.  Something that awakens your thoughts and demands attention.

But I digress…back to Keller.

There are two points that I am wrapping my mind around this week.

Galatians 3 – Paul is emphasizing the need to live by the Gospel…you were saved by the Gospel so now live by the Gospel. vs 3 – Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh? Why are you trying to live via Human Effort?  Have you forgotten the Spirit?

Just this Monday I was telling a story about Evan and sharing how we share the same trait of loving the “start over”.  I LOVE Mondays (really) and the new month and new year, and the new school year, and new seasons…you get the point.  I love rhythms because they allow a “start over”

This time will be different.
– I’m gonna be more (fill in the blank) this time.
– I’ll try this or that
– This isn’t necessarily a bad thing…in fact, because I do focus on rhythms and having a growth mindset I am always growing…always learning…always tweaking…but under who’s power is the real question?

Thank you Lord for saving me but I got this now.  Really?!? I’d never say that out loud but that’s how I live most of the time.

Secondly, dovetailing on this concept is Functional Saviors…control, approval, comfort, food, organization, doing better, recreation, etc.

Instead of believing that Christ is our hope and goodness, we are looking to something else as a hope, to some other way to make us feel good and complete. Thomas Keller, Galatians For You.

Yikes?  Sound like something you can relate to?  Yep.

I don’t have a pithy conclusion as I’m still wrestling with these myself but let’s journey together.  Can you relate?  Have you worked through some of this yourself?

Let’s talk.
