Ever play the game two truths and a lie?
It’s usually played as an icebreaker in which you tell two truths and one lie and everyone has to guess which tale is the lie.
Past • Present • Future
In this case, FUTURE is the “lie”. Why?
Well…let’s get mystical for just a moment – “does the future even exist?” – yes and no.
Tick tick tick
Yes because FUTURE is just a tick of the clock away. And yes, in this time and space of human history we can speculate and are even expected to plan and prepare for this thing called FUTURE.
But once we start assuming and counting on FUTURE we get the rug pulled out from us. She has a terrible sense of humor. Ever wake up in the morning with a plan and have it blown up before you get out the door?
FUTURE is unknowable and unstable and undependable.
Unstable: prone to change, fail, or give way; not stable.
You wouldn’t have a friend like FUTURE so why do we spend so much of our energy into something so out there and unreliable?
I think the answer lies in the twin sisters of FEAR and FAITH.
On bad days – days where the mind is stuck in a FUTURE TRIP strapped in by fear of the unknown.
On good days – days where we KNOW there is a God that loves us, has a FUTURE for us, and is a God of hope, and that this too will pass…tick tick tick

Five Minute Friday – time up
What am I talking about?
It’s Five Minute Friday and that means you write for 5 minutes (and truth be known, I struggle with the no editing and sometimes cheat a little – which just means I still need lots of practice). The exercise of writing for just five minutes is to help build a writing discipline and I thank you for tagging along as I work on my writing craft! You can learn more about and join the FMF writing challenge at www.fiveminutefriday.com
