First Focus

The last couple of weeks have been particularly challenging for me.  My job has changed quite a bit…some things were assigned to others while new responsibilities were added to me.  This has happened several times over the course of my career and is simply a fact of life.  Change happens.

In the midst of major changes, I tend to go into survival mode and a “just get it done” mentality. After the dust settles however, I take a deep breath and get myself organized.  I actually love getting organized.  It is one of my favorite things to do…taking a mess and creating order.  But let’s be frank…it is also essential for me to be organized…not only for me to be good at my job but for my emotional and spiritual well-being.  I am wired to be organized.  I consider it one of my spiritual gifts.

However, in spite of how I am wired, all the planning, organizing, systems and structures I put in place are for not if I am not focused on Him first. I suffer from anxiety, panic, self-reliance, ego and burn-out when I lose my first focus.

Romans 8:28 says “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”  I belong to God and because I have dedicated my life to His work …all the work I accomplish is through His power and for His glory.

So today, as you go about your work, remember who you belong to and seek first the kingdom of God….everything else is just details.
