Day 27 – Power of a Name

What’s in a name?  There is a lot of power in a name.  There is credibility, reputation, and authority.  If you have a good reputation your name goes a long way…if not, well, people will disregard what you have to say.

A name can also mean security and belonging.  Call me old school but I loved, loved, loved taking my husband’s name.  Once married we were the Matthews Family…not just the two of us but his grandparents, his parents, his siblings…I gained a whole lot more family.  A pretty awesome family at that.  Then we built our own little family…that I pray one day will continue to expand with daughters and grandchildren. I absolutely love being married and belonging to something larger than myself.

AND then there’s the name of Jesus.  Have you ever cried out to Jesus is desperation?  In joy and praise?  There is so much meaning, power, and authority in the name Jesus. His name is an anchor in the storms of life.

Your Name is higher, Your Name is greater,
All my hope is in You,
Your Word unfailing, Your promise unshaken.
All my hope is in You.
“Anchor, ” Hillsong Music 2013

But Jesus has other names as well. Sometimes, I need to focus on His attributes, His character, His faithfulness as well as his Name.

Lord of All
The deliverer and redeemer
The author and perfecter of salvation
Advocate
Comforter
Faithful and True
Great I AM
Light of the World
Prince of Peace
The Way
Wonderful Counselor

Comforting yes?  Let me finish with one final thought…what other names are you called?  Sometimes in this crazy world we live in we are assigned names that are simply not true.  As women, we’re called some awful things.  As moms we are judged by other moms…sometimes we are the judge. Even in our own hearts we are not the most loving towards ourselves…so I’ll leave you with some truth this evening…

You are…
A new creation
Fearfully and wonderfully made
Greatly loved
Justified and redeemed
God’s workmanship created to produce good works
Sealed by the Holy Spirit
Set Free

You were bought at a price…valuable beyond words…sleep on that my friends.
